Theory is difficult for some

Theory is difficult for many students. Some students think they come to cosmetology school to just learn how to "do" hair. But they must also learn the theory behind all hair services as well as manicures, facials and skin. Some find it a bit of a challenge.

It doesn't need to be all that hard though. Break things down into smaller groups. Take it slow. Most people are surprised by what they already know and just didn't know they knew! Work with a study buddy. Make index flash cards and USE them. Highlight your text book. Write things in the book to help you remember things easier. Outline the chapters so the information is easier to review later on. Make a vocabulary list of the words that matter to each chapter. Never let those words leave you. Put them to use everyday so they stay familiar to you. Become familiar with the terms used in the book.

When you are out and about look at people and determine what type of hair cut they have. How it was created. Look at their skin, their nails the shape of their eyebrows. Look, always be looking. Study people. Determine what looks good on people. Decide why one look is more pleasing than another. Figure out how to re-create those good things. Also figure out how the negatives were done so you can be on the watch not to make the same mistakes.

Life offers a constant course of study. But, a fun, interesting and exciting one. I was shopping recently and the customer behind me in line had the most amazing hair style. I of course told her how fantastic she looked. (She looked at me in return as though I had lost my mind!) I make sure I compliment people I pass when they look extra special. And while they are telling me how they achieved the look I learn so much! Life can be amazingly fun if you let it be.
